Moving day coming up...

How does one accumulate so much crap? I've been trying to figure this out, as this is how our basement looks, and we still haven't moved our stuff in from the Condo. Oh, Friday will be fun...

I see that the boxes are all numbered, did you guys actually go so far as to catalog your crap, or are you just using old cartons that we already marked?

Have fun on with your move this weekend...

Yep,that would be Mike being all organized. My boxes just have crap loaded, and yea, most are blank.

We tried to do that when we packed up our stuff for storage. The list started well but by about box 6 the list changes from detailed contents to information like "Some books and other items."

Turns out that isn't very helpful if you decide you want to get something.

Yea, labeling a box "crap" doesn't help much either...

well, actually, for my boxes it works like a physical database....leave it to an ex dba to come up with an idea like this.

I have an Access database that I built where each numbered box has a complete listing of the contents and its own classifications so that I can figure out what its general function is. I realized that if I were going to put all my music gear in storage and I had to retrieve it that I had better have a foolproof way of finding the box with the stuff I needed.
so, i really do know what is in each of those boxes and the numbers are really key values in the database.

I got the idea when I got my first real job and I had to track all types of weird medical equipment in a warehouse. I couldnt tell the idiots who worked the warehouse to get me the 7956 Ostomy bags with the 1 1/4 inch flange and the electro stimulators...but if I told them to retrieve box 568 - it didnt really matter what was in it, they would just bring it back. Then I just needed to be concerned whether or not they ran over it with the forklift....or if they would drive the forklift off the loading dock - but thats another story.

So, this system works, i am thinking of patenting it. However, Mark is right, you only get as much utility out of it as you have data integrity. GIGO - pretty typical database concept.

Oh well, gotta pack the condo now - ciao!!!

Mike

You're a bit of a freak! That being said, when we move, can we employ your services? Ah, as Mark stated you will need to fly to China.
